Exporting format issues
Hey,
I’ve got two questions. I just finished editing a video and I need to upload it to the internet as well as burn it onto a DVD. The footage I’m using is from a Panasonic DVC30. It shoots 30 fps in SD. Also, I’m working in CS4.1) For the online version (Youtube), I tried exporting it as H.264 format, NTSC DV High Quality Preset, 640×480, progressive. It exported to a reasonable 120 MB and uploaded fine onto the internet. However, when it finished uploading, the video wasn’t playing properly. The audio was playing fine but the visual was all gray and blotchy. At first I figured it was just Youtube, so I tried a couple more times and got the same thing. So I tried exporting again but with the Youtube preset. It worked fine that time, but the quality was a little worse. Just curious if anyone knows why the other preset wouldn’t work on the internet when it worked fine playing back on my computer.
2) For the DVD version, I’m exporting it as MPEG 2 format, NTSC DV High Quality preset, 720×480, and progressive. Where it says quality under the video tab, I tried exporting it in a variety of settings ranging from 3-5 quality (1-5 is the scale). In all of these exported versions, the video would play back with the occasional lag in the same spot, which means it wasn’t just my computer being slow. Also, the spot where it lagged was different with each exported version. What can I change in my export settings to avoid this lag?

Hi John,
Try using the YouTube preset, but increase the data rate (not the quality slider, but the actual data rate). Also, after uploading to YouTube, you must wait for YouTube to re-process the video; it will initially look very bad if you try to watch it immediately after upload.
For the DVD issue, are you previewing the MPEG-2 file on the PC? I wouldn’t worry too much about that, burn an actual DVD and play it on a set-top player to judge quality and playback issues. I like to always use CBR rather than VBR encoding, unless the project is very long, so try CBR also.

I actually already put the video up using the Youtube preset but that was before I saw this message, so I didn’t play around with the data rate. I’ll keep that in mind for next time. I had waited for the other preset to finish re-processing on Youtube, it just never went to normal.
I exported the MPEG-2 file using CBR encoding as you recommended. But when I go to open the file in iMovie it doesn’t open. I guess this is just an iMovie issue? Anyway, I figured I would just export the movie as a MOV or AVI file for that program.

Hi John,
I didn’t know you were on a Mac, so I don’t know if your DVD software will accept .m2v and .wav files or not. Do you have Encore DVD? On the PC, you can simply use File > Export > Encore and go straight out to DVD from the Premiere timeline.

I’m working on a PC but there is no built in DVD burner, only a CD burner. So I took the file to my buddy’s Mac and tried to burn it through iMovie. I re-exported the video as a .MOV file though and it worked fine. I’m looking into Encore right now actually because I am going to be buying a new computer soon. Thanks for all of your help!
