We are exporting from XPro 4.6 as QuickTime to then DVD author using Adobe Encore 1.5. Traditionally (with earlier versions of Xpress Pro) we made a reference QT file and then imported directly to Encore. Although it may not be due to 4.6 we are now experiencing some “strobbing” when we create the DVD. By “strobbig” I mean something very similar to shooting on 24p – it is especialy obvious in fast moving action scenes. BTW the material was shot standard 29.97 interlaced.

We have tried different settings and codecs but none have done the tick – some minimize the strobbing but deteriorate the image, while others leave the image unaffected but enhance the strobbing.

Any suggestios regarding this issue will be most approaciated.

    Thank you,

    Ozzie

Make sure you have the proper setting for upper or lower field for the encoder you are using. I am assumning these are 30 frame/60 field interlace sources.

That is correct – these are NTSC 29.97 interlaced frames. The cameras used were Ikegamis digital cams. The digitizing was from a DVCam deck straight to the Avid Xpress Pro 4.6 at full resolution for on-lining.

Which field do you suggest? We’ve tried both but only on the exporting end, not as we digitize.

Hmmmm…. I don’t know what to say – that was my shot in the dark. I only work in progressive so I don’t have any more suggestions. Let me check around.

Make sure your transcoding settings in Encore is set to the correct field, frame rate.
    Just a thought.

They are but the problem shows up before we ever get to Encore. The effect shows up on the referece Quicktimes we make right out of the Avid while still in the system. Note that it does NOT show up IN Avid, only in the QuickTime. It only gets worse with subsequent coding and decoding. The shitter speed that ematerial was shot and the fps sre standers NTSC – 29.97 at 1/30th (or is it 1/60th?) and interlaced.

We have never experienced this problem before – at least not as pronounced.
