  • Exporting DVCPro HD sequence to SD Letterboxed QT

    Mornin’ all
I’m attempting to export a DVCPro HD sequence to generate a Quicktime movie for the client’s FTP site. I need to end up with a SD 8bit uncompressed file with the video letterboxed into a 4×3 format. The original sequence is 23.98fps HD Cam captured as DVCPro HD thru a Kona 3 card and edited on a 23.98fps timeline.
The problem I’m having is getting the video into a letterboxed format on the new Quicktime movie. I’m just using Export via Quicktime Conversion to generate the new QT movie. I check the letterbox field but it’s failing to letterbox the final movie correctly and I’m ending up with what looks like an anamorphic file with the sides cropped in a bit resulting in something that looks kind of like a pillerbox. Is the 1280×1080 format of the DVCPro HD the problem?
Short of copy/pasting the sequence into a 4×3 timeline and re-rendering, is there a way to achieve a standard def 8bit uncompressed 4×3 & letterboxed version of the DVCPro HD sequence?
    thanks,
    Tom

Why not create a native 16/9 QT? By setting the Aspect Ratio to CUSTOM, you can input the dimensions of the QT file. DO NOT click the letterbox box, DO NOT click the “preserve aspect ratio”!!! Once you set the aspect ratio to CUSTOM and input the numbers, it will take care of the rest.

I use 600×338 to create native 16/9 QT movies of DVCPROHD material.

As an example, you can check out a music video I shot with the F900. It was captured using the Kona card as 23.98 DVCPROHD.

The beauty of this, is that you eliminate those unnecessary black bars at the top and bottom of the QT!

    Thanks John.
Unfortunatly these Quicktimes are destined for broadcast(!?). They will be downloaded from the clients FTP site by the broadcast stations so they need to be letterboxed 4×3 since few TV stations are airing true 16×9 for local insertion yet. There are standard defination tapes being delivered as well. This will be the first time the client has tried the download option for delivery of their spots.
So, since I’m under a deadline, I simply pasted the sequence into a 4×3 SD timeline, cleaned it up a bit and outputted it from there. The resulting QT’s look fine and are going to be uploaded in a few minutes.
I’d still like to find a reliable way to export directly from the HD timeline however…I’ll work on it. This is the first time I’ve edited using the DVCPro HD codec. I usually use 10bit uncompressed when editing HD. There were slight learning curve/workflow differences with this project but for the most part it went flawlessly from shoot to edit. Best of all, it’s approved, out the door and coming soon to a TV near you!
