exporting as mpeg2 for broadcast
Posted by Cody Baker on January 5, 2006 at 10:23 pmAnyone know a codec or setting that works in After Effects that will render/export mpeg2 program stream file at 18Mbs, for broadcast?
My current workflow is this…
edit video/audio on FCP 5
export from FCP 5 for use in AE 6.5
graphics, effects in AE 6.5But now I need to render/export from AE 6.5 for upload to FastChannel (broadcast delivery service) at the above mentioned specs.
Any thoughts?

January 5, 2006 at 11:28 pmWhy mpeg2 for Fastchannel?
I always send fastchannel our stuff in something like sorenson (listed on their specs).
If you really want mpeg2 and it’s the same as DVD, use a compression program like Apple’s compressor or discreet Cleaner.
What specs are they giving you?

January 6, 2006 at 1:57 pmI upload to an FTP that FastChannel set up for me, then their production dept. does the “real” upload.
The specs they gave me for this are as follows:Video: 18Mbs, MPEG 2 Program Stream, 4:2:2 , 9 frame GOP, 29.97 FPS, 4 by 3 Aspect Ratio, 720 x 512 (recommended)
Audio: MPEG-1 Layer 2, 2 Channels, 48 KHz, 20 bit, 384 Kbps (recommended)I produce everything on a mac, but Compressor doesn’t allow 18Mbs for MPEG 2. So, i take my finished 30 sec spot out of AE as a QT animation file, and take it to my old PC where i have a license for Sorenson Squeeze and then convert the QT file to an MPEG 2 Program Stream, but only at 15Mbs—-because that’s the highest Sorenson Squeeze will go.
I see that on my mac, AE 6.5 has “Sorenson” and “Sorenson 3” as compression type choices under Quicktime render (in the render queue). But it doesn’t let me choose things like 15-18Mbs…. So my question to you is:
Does Sorenson or Sorenson 3 straight from AE 6.5 do the trick for FastChannel? Are the settings I should be aware of?Thanks for your input!

January 6, 2006 at 9:39 pmI realized you use Fast Channel for a different purpose than we do. We use it like most ppl in the ad game to show reels and such. The part I use is this:
https://www.fastchannel.com/CreativeChannel/default.asp
So I guess the specs i get and what you use it for are different.

you made a post a while back about “banding” when you’re encoding with Encore … I have exactly the same thing and wondered if you’d ever figured it out ? … you can get back to direct at algy40@hotmail.com
