Hi! I’m kind of a dope when it comes to color management (and when it comes to many other things!). I was working on a project in Cinema 4D, and I had converted the scene to OCIO, using the ACES preset. The renders have all been done with this preset enabled, and saved to EXR. I really don’t need to do much correction to any of it, I just want to make sure that the final export from After Effects retains the same look as the final renders coming out of C4D, which looked great.

I learned more about ACES only after starting the project, and realized I’m pretty out of my depth. So I’m just a dork looking for some guidance. I’ve got my renders all in ACEScg. How should I set up my project in AE so that I can see the animation the way I’ve been seeing it, and get my renders to look the same? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Maybe I figured it out. I guess the answer is to use the OpenColorIO effect on an adjustment layer in the final comp, set it to “Display”, and convert from ACEScg to sRGB using the ACES 1.0 SDR-video “View” preset? Does that sound about right?

You’re on the right track. You’re able to preserve the appearance of your ACEScg renders in Cinema 4D by using the OpenColorIO effect on an adjustment layer in the final composition and choosing the right parameters, such as “Display” with ACES 1.0 SDR-video “View” preset. This method aids in colour management to guarantee application consistency.
