  • Exporting a QT conversion movie with the Avid 1:1x codec.

I had to send a fix to an editor that is on an Avid to fix a spot in a master I sent him earlier. Instead of sending a new master I wanted to try to send just the few frames for him to place in his timeline.

Avid is nice enough to offer their codecs online for something like this (It would be nice if Apple and Panasonic would do the same). The only problem was the export footage was darken and had a bluer bias to the clips. It was not an Avid this because this happened to other codecs like 10 bit Uncompressed if I went through the QT conversion Export method vs a QT ref that is self contained. I was able to use filters and get it closer and the guy other the other end was able to make it work with a little more tweaking. Is there a better way to do this.

my sequence was a 10 Bit Uncompressed SD 720×486 sequence the end result was Avid 1:1x file.

If he’s got it off tape and you’re sending a file there’s various point at which the colours could become a little different.

In the Avid codec settings there is also settings for Input levels (601 or RGB) and the same goes for the import in Avid. If at first one option doesn’t work try the other – I have successfully exported from FCP to Avid with Avid codecs, so it is possible, but I can’t recall what settings were necessary to get it correct.

Yes it is a match file frames to capture off the tape but there is also a marked difference when I compare a QT exported with QT vs QT conversion, even if I use the same codec. The conversion is a lot darker.

It will be a matter of the Levels settings (RGB/601) at export and/or import. I believe, however that some QT implementations don’t do whatever it is that is necessary for the actual setting in the QT codec options to be implemented (so that whatever settings you choose the exporting application does something else). I don’t know a lot about it, but I have exported without especially poor results.
