I have a camera animation in c4d and 3 3d elements. I want to create an animation in AE that would require me to mask off each element separately. I could probably do this via masks against the rendered .mov file but I was hoping there was a way I could export each object as it’s own ae layer? I’ve tried the compositing and external compositing tags but I either end up with just the flattened animation or some null objects representing the position of each element. Is there a way to do this? Thanks.

You can’t do it directly, but you render out separate masks for each object and use those in AE to separate them. Assign each object a compositing tag and then assign each one a number in the comp. tag’s “Object Buffer” tab.

Now add three Object Buffer passes in render settings>multipass and assign them the corresponding numbers. When you import the project into AE the object buffers will show up in the “Special Passes” folder.

Thanks but when I do that and import the aec file, there is no special passes folder. Only a Cinema 4D Compostition folder and a solids folder.

Did you specify a file path and name in the multipass tab?
