DNxHD [link] is offered by Avid as a free QuickTime codec, so it’s available to any application that can use QuickTime for output. You can download DNxHD 2.3.7 here [link].
The latest version of Premiere Pro (CC) supports DNxHD natively in MXF wrappers. Its performance is significantly better than using the QuickTime codecs, but I think you’ll see a big difference between QuickTime/PNG and QuickTime/DNxHD, too.
