exported tagas, then re-imported, resolution quality????
Hi…
Does anyone have any evidence that exported tagas , then re-imported, then re-exported, have any losses in resolution quality, especially if this is done several times. Is it safe to do this or will they degenerate into a low resolution “blocky video”??? any help would be useful.
They are being exported from projects set at 16bpc and out at 32bpc. RGB+ 1920 x 1080. This is being done to salvage several problematic huge projects and combine them to work on again.
I cant really see any lowering of resolution, just wondered if anyone had.

hi anita,
there’s no compression in the targa format, so you won’t see generational loss… but i believe targa is only 8bpc, so the 16-32bpc color data will converted to 8bpc.
while that’s not the end of the world, if you wanted to maintain the extra color data, you should try psd or tif.

I once did a showdown with all the image sequence formats. Here’s what I discovered…
Targas give a slight pixel shift even though they’re lossless, as do png’s. For 16bpc, I looked into Tiff and PSD.
The only time Tiff is safe is if LZW compression is off, which can’t be turned off in PNG’s.
Since Tiff trillions 16bit(LZW off), is much smaller than PSD, I use it for outputing sequences. btw it’s used in animation studios and hollywood too. I would love to hear other thoughts.

Thanks that is so helpful, I will change to tiffs. I much prefer sequences, I can replace/overwrite frames and if AE crashes then I can start anywhere again.
