Hi, I have a bit of a crisis.

I have been generating new quicktimes from my HDCAM sequences. It’s easier than nesting the items for me and serves as a good back up, although I do find myself returning to the original sequence and repatching the sections that I’ve changed with the individuals layers. Maybe this workflow isn’t so good, but now I have a major problem.

    This is what has happened:

    1. Exported the quicktime using same sequence settings
    2. Reimport that rendered quicktime into a new timeline, and cut together with other footage.
    3. As I have been working on a couple different computers / switching from DVCProHD to Blackmagic 1080i, it’s gotten quite complicated I
*accidentally moved my quicktime file around in the finder*

    Problem now:
When I open up my current sequence with the rendered quicktime, it says that it wants to locate a reference file that I used for the new quicktime. I think this is a result of moving the file around in the finder (Having realized that this new rendered file is a graphic original source I moved it to a new folder called MASTER).
I see the reference file in the finder, but it will not reconnect to it. Even when I look at the preview of the rendered quicktime, I get no image, as if it can’t give me picture cause it’s not recognizing the reference rendered file. When I try to force reconnection, it does not give me the option of choosing the file and overriding it’s original path.

This file is critical to the current sequence, as it’s full of several renders / graphics that I simply will not be able to recreate. I did not lay it off to tape either.

This is the second time I have encountered this problem. I thought when generating a new rendered quicktime, the files should be independant, and not linked to any reference files, but this does not seem to be the case!

Any suggestions, help would be great.

It appears that this time you output your QT without checking the Make Self Contained box. That creates a QT reference file that is does not have all the components of a standalone QT file. You will most likely have to find the original timeline and attempt to create your file again.

Your technique is not uncommon for someone who wants to jump right in on an editing system without learning proper methodology on that system, and it will allow you to create, but it is frought with hazzards as you’ve found out. In addition, depending upon what video format you’re working with, you may well be greatly diminishing the quality of your video via generation loss. Its well worth the time and expense to receive proper training either from a trainer or via a DVD training course.

Thanks so much. I figured this was the case. The problem is, I have the reference file on the drive, but it won’t reconnect to it. Is there a way to force this?
Now my question is, by exporting the quicktime, am I doing a generational loss?

since you sound like an export, I’ll ask you a couple more questions:

    1. The other complication was that I was crossing from a 1080iHDCAM sequence to a DVCPro HD sequence and back up to HDCAM. I was careful about using all my original files, but I am trying to determine the best way to cross platform like this to stay in high def (for offline — let’s call the DVCPro HD, offline) is this wrong to do?

    2. When rendering (esp in HDCAM 1080i) I’ve found a way to get around the whole render issue, but setting the sequence to 33%, doing all my efx and looking at it in low res. once I’m happy, go back to the render manager and delete those files. Thereafter I’ll change the sequence settings back to 100% and re-render. It works so far, but I’m wondering if there’s another workflow for low res/ high res….

    thanks so much!

[Lili Lab] “since you sound like an export, I’ll ask you a couple more questions:”

I would also consider David an EXPORT. He’s got a huge ego, though, a result of clicking the Make Self Contained button on.
