I know the subject line is bad, but it’s hard to explain what the problem is.

I’m editing a video where a teacher writes the wrong number on the board. I use a second video layer with the right number, to correct over the top of the main video layer. I crop the 2nd layer frame by frame so that as her hand moves, the 2nd layer doesn’t cover her hand; so that it looks seemless. I render the clip and preview it and the edit looks fine.

I export the clip as a quicktime movie with “current settings” selected, when viewing the qt, I notice that the cropping of the second layer doesn’t look like the edits that I had made in fcp. The 2nd layer is actually noticeable because it covers her hand a little bit; which in FCP that layer clearly doesn’t.

    Does this make sense?

    Hmmm…

First off I’d have to say that this sounds kindof ambitious to try to do in FCP. Would probably look better done in AE or combustion, or at least with some kind of mask plug-in. But the crop tool??

If what you had on the timeline looked OK in FCP, then it should look identical on the QT that you exported. Did you do a “Self-contained” movie, or reference? And is this DV, uncompressed, or what?

It’s self-contained and is saved off with the current settings of DV.
I’m sure there would be easier, more efficient methods, but … I have what I have.

    Thanks

    I hear ya.

I’m really not sure why your exported movie doesn’t jive with what you see in FCP. Are you viewing video on an external NTSC monitor? And if so, does it look right there? And if you import that DV clip you exported, does it look right on the external monitor?

You might want to try using the “Eight-Point Garbage Matte” that is in your Matte folder under the effects tab. You could also use the 4-point if you don’t need that much control. I have found this to be a somewhat weird plug-in, but it does the job. You’ll have to keyframe each point, though.

That 8 point matte really did the trick. Never thought to use that filter before.
    Thanks for the tip.

As for the original post’s issue, though no cause or remedy was found … The matte will make that type of editing obsolete.
