I have footage shot on P2 then exported to QT with the DVCPro HD 1080i60 compressor. This was given to me on DVD from the client. I take those clips, put them on the timeline in Final Cut Pro v 1.5.4, then try to export them to my XDCam PDW-F70 deck. But I get a failure everytime. I’ve looked at Apple’s white papers and followed them completely. The XDCam Transfer Software is updated to v 2.7.0

This includes changing my audio output settings to 4 channels all set to dual mono. My sequence is set to XDCam HD 1080i60 (35 mb/s VBR) and then my deck is set to MPEGHD 1080 60i with the audio set to 4 channels x 16 bit. It’s also set to HQ to match the 35 mb/s. I’ve tried every combination of output settings and settings on the deck that I could think of and still get the same error: Failure to write MXF file. And the record inhibit is not on by the way.

I’ve been on the phone with Apple and Sony and neither can figure out what’s wrong. I’ve looked at every forum I can and can’t find a solution. I feel like I’m missing one little thing and if anyone can figure out what it is, that would solve hours and hours of frustration.

I have been told you cannot export to any XDCAM deck using the DVCPROHD codec over FW.

Try to Render the timeline as XDCam HD 1080i60 (35 mb/s VBR) to a self-contained QT file and use that in your timeline. if that does not work – try the 25mb version- it is a constant bit rate

I thing this is a codec conflict issue. DVCPROHD does not contain the correct info internally in the file, so when the file is trying to re-render (a function of all long GOP outputs ) it is crashing the render engine.

Thanks so much for the quick response, Gary!

I tried these things and still was having no luck. Even imported XDCAM footage wasn’t able to export. I got back on the phone with Sony and it turns out my deck’s firmware hasn’t been updated since it was bought about 2 or 3 years ago. I had to order a 128 MB SD card directly from Sony because Best Buy doesn’t sell anything smaller the 1 GB and the original firmware on the deck can’t handle any card bigger 128MB. I then downloaded the latest firmware update here: https://servicesplus.us.sony.biz/sony-software-model-PDWF70.aspx

I then followed the instructions that downloaded with it and bam! I can now export out of Final Cut Pro to my xdcam deck. Even the DVCPRO HD compressed footage exports fine.

Hopefully this will save someone else a couple day’s frustration.

    Glad it worked for you…

This will be an ongoing issue, the HVX camera can only take a 64MB card and those are becoming rarer and rarer to find.
