Export To Straight To Video Streaming From Avid

Yes, several can do it. However it’s the straight-to-vimeo issue thats the issue.

But lets start at the beginning.

Are you familiar with a quicktime reference? I go into some detail here: https://michaelkammes.com/editorial/encoding-during-editorial/

This gets your file out of Avid as quick as possible, freeing up your Avid to do more editing.

Thsi qt reference should be exported to a “Watch Folder” (AKA Hot folder). This folder is constantly being monitored by an encoding solution. The encoder then picks up the qt reference and does the appropriate encoding for Vimeo…or whatever your choice of sharing sites.

It’s the upload to Vimeo that may be the tricky part. Compressor, with the help of Automator can give the watch folder functionality…but currently only has a preset to upload to Youtube. More advanced solutions, like Episode by Telestream can more easily handle watch folders (and have more parameters for encoding)….and some even send you an email when done.

Vimeo, at one point, had a desktop app in beta that allowed for auto uploading….but I see that it has been discontinued. (https://vimeo.com/forums/topic:19487)

However, if with one click I could export a file, which kicks off an encoding solution, then sends me an email when finished so I can then manually upload…that seems like the first step to automation, albeit not just “1 click”.

Hi Michael,

Thanks very much. Yes I am familiar with QT ref, and am always on the lookout for faster ways to get out of the Avid. Unfortunately the BITC always slows this down.

Great suggestions there, thanks, I suppose what I really want is for an editor working late, when there is no edit support, to be able to export to a folder and that’s that job done. 2 ways I can do this, export straight to Dropbox but make sure the export setting means the file will below their maximum video size. Or export to watch folder on Sorenson which then copies to Dropbox automatically after encode has finished.

So getting the file ready to upload is not now the difficult part. The difficult part, as you suggest is doing the upload.

Really Dropbox is perfect because you can send the link to the folder before anything is in it. Two pitfalls are, 1 it isn’t really designed to stream video, 2, it has the file size limit for streaming…
