  • Export to Quicktime or H.264 – Cannot set the bitrate

Posted by Richard Crook on February 10, 2010 at 1:13 am

    Hello,

Since going from CS3 to CS4, I’ve had nothing but added problems. Seems the upgrade was very much NOT worth it!

One of the MANY MANY issues is exporting to quicktime, MP4, or h264 (pretty much anything that uses a QT wrapper) will NOT let me adjust the bitrate. It seems to want to revert to full bitrate regardless what I set it as. I can go back and try to reset it when Media Encoder pops up, but it still ONLY EXPORTS TO THE HIGHEST BITRATE.

I’ve searched and searched for a solution and can’t find it. Before I uninstall with maddening “upgrade” and reinstall CS3, I’m hoping someone with the same problem and fix will help me out.

Thanks everyone….I’m just a little frustrated!!!

    Hi Richard,

I too have experienced this phenomenon, but there is a solution.

The bitrate is locked into the Quicktime Format so don’t try to use that one. Use the H.264 Format instead. The bitrate is also limited here by the “Level” settings under the video tab.

If you change from H.264 DV high quality the level is set to 3.1 if you change to a preset for AppleiPod Video Small the level setting is on 1.3 there is a limit on the max bitrate possible.

It took some playing around to find the right setting level amount to work on specific frame size and bitrates but once i found them I saved the presets.

So long as you are using the correct level setting you can adjust the bitrate and it will stick.

Well, unfortunately simply ‘not using’ QT as an export option…is not an option. My client wants QT and that’s what he will get. I’ve noticed though that the same thing happens in H264 too.

Someone posted a workaround by clicking “custom” on AME after it pops up and changing the bitrate there, but sadly that isn’t working either as the settings arent sticking.

Just a little background…I’m shooting actor auditions for major roles and the studios require Quicktime H.264 files in MOV format…UNDER 10MB. So it’s imperitive that I be able to adjust the bitrate.

What I’ve been doing is export to QT, allowing a stupid large file to be made despite my settings, and then I must open it in quicktime player and export again.

Did I mention that I am starting to despise CS4? I’m not bitter or anything….haha.

    Richard,

All you need to do is export the H.264 file and change the extension from mp4 to mov. That’s it.

The client/s probably don’t even need to have a .MOV extension anyway.
