Customer wants HI8 tapes as masters (don’t ask why).

I have a Mac Pro with Premiere CS6. Exporting via ye olde Canopus ADVC-110. Using Composite (yellow phono cable). I do not have a NTSC monitor, so I cannot monitor the signal coming back from the HI8 machine, except doing a fake Capture in Premiere, just to see the signal.

    Problem:
When watching the signal, I notice that the lumninance value grows slowly, and then jumps back down, resulting in a visible drop in luminance strenght. The signal does this all the time, with irregular intervals, but approx. 5 – 10 seconds in between each jump. This could only be the signal coming back into my Capture window, which does this, or it could not.

The Canopus box is set to Stream Synch (contrary to Fixed). And i´ve tried switching on the HI8 machine between INT and EXT, with no difference.

Does anyone recognize this problem? Tape head cleaning? Should I get at TBC or something? Or does it have something to do with some sync settings?

    Thanx.
