Export to MPEG2 Mystery
Posted by Pete Pedulla on January 25, 2006 at 11:24 pmI work at a facility with multiple systems all running FCP v.5.0.4.
Only one offers the ability to export a sequence as an MPEG2 file. If I’m in the Timeline Window, and I go to File>Export>Using Quick Time Conversion… THEN in the drop down menu that reads Format:Quick Time Movie, I have the ability to choose MPEG2.
None of the other systems we have let us do this. As far as we know, we set them all up the same way.
We generally use Compressor to create our MPEG2 files, so we’re in business okay. But, we are simply curious and quite stumped.
Thanks in advance!

Nope, you don’t have that ability with FCP 5 / DVD Studio Pro 4 / Compressor 2 installed on the same machine. In fact, you shouldn’t have that option period with any FCP 5 system.
You need to export into Compressor and create the MPEG-2 there.

January 26, 2006 at 1:07 amYour workflow should be, export quicktime movie (ref file). Drag and drop that file into compreesor and choose your settings.

January 27, 2006 at 11:17 pmI can tell you right now, its because you had 6.5 QT on one system that had a mpeg2 plugin put on it, then it was updated, that why you can use it, and its way better then compressor, my compressor takes 4x-5x longer to render then that plugin, I dont understand why that guy said make a REF file first, then whats the point of Final cut letting you send the file right in compressor? The quicktime plugin is faster I feel even if its the same as compressor, I see a differnce in speed. You can’t add the plugin in 7, and I’m trying to down grade my QT 7 to 6 so I can use it on a newer machine.

Because it takes much longer to render if you let FCP send the file to Compressor. Running both apps at the same time results in MUCH slower render times than if you export a Ref file from FCP, Quit FCP and then compress in Compressor 2.
THAT’s the point of making a Ref file.

January 28, 2006 at 12:07 amBut Ref files shouldn’t take 15-20mins to make. Thats my problem. It should take a min at most right? Nothing else is running but FCP.

January 30, 2006 at 4:01 pmThanks for all the explanations. I was wondering the advantage of making a ref movie. Kyle also explained why I have the MPEG2 option on my system.
Cheers…

January 30, 2006 at 8:24 pmWhen you export a ref movie instead of a self contained movie, it takes much less time and allows the movie to use your render files and video files.
My biggest question is why does it still take so long to create that mpeg2 in compressor. With QT it took about a third of the time. Is there a setting that we haven’t changed, or does compressor simply take longer? I’m ready to make compressor work, but the time, with our current workflow, takes FAR too long. I saw that Walter said that you should quite FCP, is that the soel reason that our mpeg2 take so much longer?
