Export to AE and back to Premiere
I shoot in HDV and capture using HDVSplit. Then I edit my footage in Premiere, usually i have few long timelines(1-2h) and few short ones(2-6 minutes).
Here is my question. I need to export those short ones to color correct and add some motion graphic in After Effects. I tried few codecs but I’m still lost…
Because HDV is i YUV color space i tried HuffYUV but for unknown reason it export only in RGB(maybe i can’t configure it in proper way).
Are there any other codecs to deliver footage from Premiere to After Effects and then back to Premiere?
And what is the best worflow? For example: if i export from Premiere in HuffYUV or Lagarith, do my work i After Effects, should I export in the same format with the same settings back to Premiere?
PS. Rest of my footage(timelines not exported to AE), and those files edited in AE are going to be rendered straight from HDV to MPEG-2 to DVD or Blu-Ray.

Not sure which version of Premiere/AE you are using, or your system specs, but is there a reason you are exporting instead of using Dynamic Link? You’s save a lot of time and resolution if you used this workflow.

I have Premiere and After Effects CS4.
I work on Intel Core2 Quad 2,4GHz with 4GB Ram.
I was thinking about Dynamic Link, but to be honest i don’t really know how to use it:)
Say, I have edited sequence in Premiere, and i want to put it to AE to edit it further and then back to Premiere to put it in another sequences so i can export it to Blu-Ray all together.
Once I’ve succeeded to send sequence to AE, but after color correcting it I wasn’t able to put it back to Premiere. I got some kind of error, can’t remember what it said exactly but it was something about that Dynamic Link is one way only and i can’t put it back since I already sent it the other way.

With such a small amount of RAM, and working in 32bit, Dynamic Link may not be a good solution.

So, what do you suggest?
Since I first wrote this topic i’ve made some searching i tried Lagarith codec.
What do you think of that? Is it worth using? I compared still frame from raw HDV with frame recompressed with Lagarith and with frame compressed wit QT Animation set to 100%. I think there is no noticable difference. And Lagarith file is way smaller then QT Animation, not to mention Uncompressed AVI.Is there anything i should know about Lagarith before i begin to use it in my work? Any known problems or drawbacks?
And i think final question: should i export interlaced in Lagarith or progresive? I think interlaced with upper first, because that’s how HDV is coded.

I’ve never actually used the Lagarith codec, although I do have it installed. We settled on Cineform as an intermediate codec when ‘Uncompressed’ isn’t feasible, say, on an hour long program. However, Lagarith is free, and Cineform isn’t.
Truthfully, I haven’t switched between Premiere and AE in this manner since CS5 came out, preferring instead to open the Premiere sequences in AE directly via Dynamic Link. However, when we did use intermediate files, we had a rule to keep the video structure as close to the original as we could. In other words, if the original was interlaced, we stayed interlaced.

Thank you very much. After few experimental renderings i decided to use Lagarith as intermediate.
About interlacing – that was my first thought to export everything in same format as shot.
