In the past, that is on my last two documentaries, I exported them from Avid Xpress Pro as QT Reference in order to then burn DVDs from it.

The program I used, to convert the mov file, was Canopus Procoder 2. But then things started to get vvveeerrryyy slow with it. I mean on my last 20 minute documentary it said it was to take more than 50 hours to process it!

I went a different route for some time, exporting to tape and then capturing that to burn the disc. Not the best way, probably.

For some time I tried to understand what was going on on the original conversion, as I had upgraded from a socket A PC (for the first documentaries) onto an Athlon A64 754, both with 1GB memory. Things seemed to have got worst on the latest setup.

So I tried a different route and started using Sorenson Squeeze. Things got better. Now they got to more reasonable 8 hours or so.

Can anyone tell me if that conversion time is about right for a 26 minute film? What can I do to speed up times?

I remember doing conversions from my documentaries in just a few hours. I don’t know how to diagnose on what might be going on. I already did a clean XP SP2 install on another HD, just to see if times got shorter and they didn’t.

i have found that Squeeze converts files much quicker than what i have been using in the past which is the cleaner…it doesnt sound right that Sorenson would take 8 hrs to convert 26min doco…i have recently converted a 56min program in just over an hour….i was wondering (just maybe) if you have used alot of animations/graphics within the doco, cos it would take longer than usual cos of the layers…it just doesnt sound right that it would take that long 🙁

    You are right. Thanks.

First of all let me explain something.

After getting so long conversion times from Procoder, I made a fresh XP SP2 install on a different HD. That was to also test Avid and other problems I had been having in my “main” HD.

Most problems I had were solved, and I will migrate to this HD and make it my “main” after understanding what went bad on the other one.

To start with I blocked XP automatic updates, which caused several of my problems. As I have a hardware firewall, I am protected from hacker attack, so I don’t really need the updates.

In the new installation things got much better and I could deal with the Procoder 2 problems first (which also got slower) and the Avid problems later. When Sorenson started doing things in shorter times, I knew I was in the righ direction.

Still not getting as short times as you describe, but definitely more “normal”.

What I am getting now, on one documentary conversion, is a moment when Sorenson stops converting, saying it can’t find a “” file (exactly the name it puts). Always at the same point.

As Avid does not seem to show anything wrong there, I don’t know how to solve it.

What I did, for now, is a Digital Cut output to my DV camera, capturing and burning the DVD from it. That went fine.

But I need to get the QT Ref right.

    Suggestions?

How i normally export a reference qt file is, i right click on the sequence monitor and select Send to….Avid Studio then select Encoding for AVID DVD by SONIC..
Select on Auto Launch and select Squeeze.exe
Select Setting 1 : Sorenson Squeeze Encode for DVD then go to Options and export as Quicktime Reference
    Defaults – Digital Mastering
Select all the Flatten Video Tracks
    Fill spaces with black
    Render all video effects
Dispaly aspect ratio 4:3. 16:19 or Native Dimensions (whichever ratio you’re editing)
    Audio ( i have chosen) WAVE, 48kHz, 16bit
    Select Use AVID DV Codec
    Colour Levels RGB
Then ok it…and convert the file into whatever format you want it to be

This has not failed me (yet)
    Hope this helps 🙂

It can also help to duplicate your sequence then do a Video and Audio Mixdown, then export that as a Qtime Reference file. Especially if you mix DV and 1:1 footage or have gaps of filler anywhere between clips.
