I have finished a new video and I am wondering what will give me the best output quality.

In the past, I have used Microsoft AVI. I have noticed flaws in it, so I looked at MPEG 2 (with my own settings) and the images are sharpy and the playback is less jittery. Problem is, the original footage has smooth color gradients. When I save as mpeg I can see the changes in color (it is more noticeable anyways).

I am not full up on video terminology. (for instance, i haven’t the slightest clue what a multiplexer does [nor can i understand explanations])

So, I am guessing this is something in the settings. I am a quality fanatic and want this to come out the best I can make it. I am wondering what settings allows for maximum picture quality. (doesn’t have to be mpeg, i just have noticed it works better)

When it comes to gradient smoothness from on shade to another video is bound to colour depth. Dv and mpeg-2 like most codecs are 8bit. This will affect the shade levels within a gradient “smoothness” and quality. 10bit is too big for consumer needs but possible.

If u lessen the difference in brightness value in the master colours of the gradient u could end up with a better result in 8bit as the require shades are less to begin with.

Google colour depth in video 8 vs 10 bit for more info.
