Hello,

Can any one tell me where I’m going wrong with exporting from my Meida 100 edl to create a 16×9 Quick Time Movie? (I’m using Media 100 Suite) My work is all in 16 x 9 but whenever I export anything it creates a 4×3 movie. I can convert it to 16×9 in Quick Time Pro but when I send it to a conversion web site, I use BlipTV so that I can use it on my own web site, it comes out as 4×3 again. It’s driving me nuts!

is this 4×3 movie looking squeezed horizontally? (Or streched vertically?)
If so, it’s normal since you’re outputting an anamorphic 16×9 movie.

If you want it to look “normal” on a computer screen, output to 16×9 with these dimensions :

PAL 1024×576
NTSC 854×480
NTSC 864×486

Me again, still struggling with export setting from Media 100 Suite. I’m now trying to create a DVD (PAL) that will play on a computer and in a standard, hooked up to a telly DVD player in 16×9. My project is filmed and edited in 16×9. I’m using iDVD to make the DVD. So far I can make a 16×9 DVD that is horribly cropped way beyond the safe area setting in iDVD or I can make a DVD that ends up being 4×3. Where am I going wrong?

Hi Sue,

what version of iDVD are you using? I think I remember that some iDVD versions only supported 4:3 media. Is there a 16:9 setting in your iDVD version?

Hi Floh,

I’m using iDVD6 and it does offer the option of 4×3 or 16×9.

Hi Sue,

locate the exported QuickTime in the Finder. Open it in QuickTime Player (Pro). Under Movie Properties (Command-J) select the Video Track, and set the “Scaled Size” (under the Visual Properties tab) to 1024*576 for PAL or to 864*486 (if my math is correct) for NTSC. Save the file and open the file in iDVD again.
One additional note if you are working in NTSC: I am not sure if iDVD does the 486->480 (for MPEG2) conversion correctly. If you are seeing interlacing artifacts, you could export a DV Stream from Media 100 instead a by-reference or self contained movie. This should be in 720*480 already, which is perfect for DVDs. Then set the size to 854*480 in QuickTime Player and continue to iDVD.
