    hi everybody,

is there a way to export a QT from Avid into a format that can be edited in FCP? Tried to Export QT using “mpeg50 MXF” or “DV50 MXF” settings. Or would maybe “1:1 MXF” be the way to go?

Another thought would be to install Avid Codecs on the FCP machine? How would that work, can you get them without getting an Avid System?

    thx for any comment

That is exactly how we do it. I don’t know if it is preferred and I’m sure that there are better methods but when I need to get a file over to my partner on the Avid, I’ll just send him a quicktime using one of the Avid codecs. If you google “avid codecs” there is a link to the files . . . I think it’s the second one down – Avid Quicktime Codecs LE 1.60. The file is for Mac/PC so you will be able to read files from Avid into FCP just as easy.

I also started sending ProRes files to him after installing the codecs on his system. Works just as good, but he prefers the Avid codec files. Just a preference. Doesn’t work as well going the other way – Avid to FCP using ProRes. I’m pretty sure the ProRes Codec is read only.

I’m sure more people will chime in. Good Luck!

    hi John,

thanks, that worked pretty well. Installed the Avid Codecs on the mac and now can use the QT I got out of the Avid (newscutter XP by the way).

Now there is one more issue. I have 4 Audio Tracks captured in the Avid (let’s say DV 50 MXF). Is there a way to get all the 4 Tracks out as seperated tracks in my QT file? As far as I know QT 7 should be capable of handling that, right? But how to do from the Avid side?

You can give our latest release of MXF4QT Import a try. I reads the native Avid video and audio MXF files, no need to export anything. Just place the pure and native MXF files to your FCP project.
