Export Problems
1st let me say I love this forum, got lots of great advice.. now I need some help. I work with a Newscutter, we just went to P2, and I am looking for a way to save file footage now that our tapes are going away. I have tried exporting and saving clips as a quicktime and when played back on AVID they look great, but when played back on TV they get jumpy during pans and movement which in my world is not good. I apologize for my lack of knowledge but what am I missing here? Is it a setting, do I need to use another file format or what? I am just looking for a format I can use that will not take up too much space, to save file footage to DVD’s that will be broadcast quality so we can store them and maybe use them again. Any help would be great for I’m about out of Tylenol trying to get this to work.

Make sure you are saving same as source. Why not save the original P2 files to DVD, and skip the whole import thing?…
How are you playing back the files? Do you get the same thing when you reimport the file into Avid, or even into something like After Effects?

I saved the file same as source to a folder on the desktop, imported it back inot AVID and had trouble when the action got too fast or the camera panned. I tried burning the file in the folder to a DVD then bringing it into AVID and still the same trouble.
I can’t get every P2 card from the photogs so saving direct from P2 is not an option for me. I’m forced to get the files out of the bins after they have dumped them in.
When these quicktime files play back in AVID they look fine in the computer monitor, (maybe a little bit lighter in color) but my final product plays out on TV and it jumps when the video pans or the action gets too fast on the monitor in the edit bay and on the air.
Is quick time adjustable to make it TV ready. I worked at a previous station on something called EDIUS where we were able to save things as MPEGS and this worked just fine. Is there another option with AVID

Is it possible your photogs are shooting in progressive? That could explain why it looks bad on the NTSC monitor, but not in the Avid (which uses a progressive scan monitor).

Also, if “space-saving” is your reason for wanting to use QT, you must be compressing them – which would be bad.
Exporting as Animation or None are the only two “lossless” codecs that you can use in QT and those would still create very large files.

Thanks to the board here I have beaten the problems with saving to quicktime and being able to playback on air. The guy are shooting in progressive but as long as I export odd field first this does away with my problems, also, brining them back to AVID with the color settings on 601 eliminates the fading problems I had.
The problem now is these are some huge files, about 20 minutes/files of video fit on a standard DVD. Is there another format I can use to get more on these DVD’s. I converted video to mpeg files when I worked with Edius and would get 40 minutes worth of files on one DVD but now I can’t get the settings, formula right to do it again….
