Export Problem
Hey guys,
Want to export a 720p24 uncompressed 8-bit movie from FCP. Wanted to use the “Export To Quicktime” so that it would not get recompressed. This is my first time on FCP 6 and things are a little different. The other thing is that I usually work on a machine with either a Kona or Decklink card which have their own Easy Setups. I downloaded the Kona codecs, but still don’t have the option to export a 720p24 8-bit movie without having to create a custom setup. I don’t even see any Kona options in the Export to Quicktime or Easy Setup. Do I need to download the drivers too to see these options? If I just create a custom setup with all the right settings, will that basically just be the same as if Aja had done it for their setups?

Why doesn’t FCP have built in 10 and 8 bit HD settings? Why are there only uncompressed 422 settings for NTSC and PAL formats?

If you’ve created your sequence with those settings and you export to QuickTime Movie using current settings that’s what you get.

Right. But there is not easy setup for 10 and 8 bit HD sequences in the out of the box FCP, so you would custom create and easy setup, right? Well, I was just tooling around with the fixed format thing and decided to edit in a DVCProHD timeline, even though the footage was 8bit (don’t ask me why). Anyhow, I am just match framing the shots and then exporting from the viewer to send shots out to rotoscope. So, as you can see, I am actually not exporting from a sequence. Also, does “current” match your sequence settings or your easy setup? I know I could just make my own easy setup and be off and running, but just wondering.

Current match the settings of the clip your exporting or the settings of the sequence you’re exporting.

I only get the “current” option if I try to export a sequence, but not if I export a clip from the viewer.

That’s very strange. It works for me if I have the clip open in the Viewer or select it in the Browser. It doesn’t matter if the clip was opened from the Browser or the Timeline. The default current settings always is available.

I thought that seemed a bit odd. I don’t know why it isn’t showing up. Well, I just installed FCP 6 the other day and haven’t done any updates to it yet…so maybe I should try that. Do you recommend the latest release of v6? No major bugs to look out for?

There are fewer bugs in 6.0.1 than 6.0, but the big one, losing render files, is still there.
