Export output shows different (ugly) contrast
I have an issue with rendering/exporting a video with FCP.
The output video shows a way different (ugly) contrast…
I tried to figure out why but cant find the reason for this.
Also the blacks seem to be much lesser then in FCP.
I know just the order of used filters can make a big different in the way the video looks. Is it possible that the order of my filters can effect >only< the export version?Here are the needed screenshots:

In Quicktime, you need to go into the preferences and enable FINAL CUT PRO COLOR COMPATIBILITY.

Why? It’s not only in the Quicktime player. Also in other common players.

Because the Viewer and Canvas in FCP 7 and earlier aren’t color accurate…they aren’t designed to be. They are designed only to see what you are doing. FCP Legacy was designed to edit for TV and DVD…so it was designed to work with IO cards that sent a signal to a broadcast monitor or HDTV…and THAT is where you’d judge your quality. It wasn’t designed with Quicktime and web delivery in mind. You graded it so that it looked good there, and that was the best you can do. Because various TVs and computer displays will show the colors differently, depending on how they were balanced.
Now, FCX and Adobe were designed with web only delivery in mind. Their interfaces are designed to show you what you will see when you export a full res QT file. But know that if you recompress to something like H.264, it won’t look exactly the same as some information was tossed.
But yes…why it doesn’t look the same is because it wasn’t designed to.

Crap… So is there any work around like adding a specific filter to the total sequence to correct this? Right now I can’t effort a new version of FCP.

You need an IO device and an HDTV at least. There are cheap Decklink options like the INtensity Pro, or Mini Monitor if you have a Thunderbolt enabled computer. Use that to send a signal to an HDTV that you might already own.
There are no filters or work arounds to make the FCP interface color accurate.

Shane, I think your information before was not fully correct.
I fixed the problem by simply using Compressor instead of Quick Time Conversion to export my video. Looks totally the same now as in FCP, also in other PC players.
Anyway, big smile on my face again! 🙂Timo
