  • Export on DVD in Widescreen format

I am sure that this question has been asked many times…But I’m new so sorry about that. I have a project that was shot using a DVX camera and it was shot in widescreen. When I export the movie in quicktime the widscreen format is maintained. But when I use IDVD and export it to a DVD the widescreen format is still somewhat maintained (I can still see the black bars on the top and bottom of the picture), but it appears in the 4:3 format on my widescreen TV. What setting do I need to use in either IDVD (4.0.1) or FCP (HD 4.5) so that when I export the file to a DVD it will play it in widescreen on a widescreen TV and not 4:3

Do you see black bars on the top and bottom of your exported file in the QuickTime player? You shouldn’t. If you do the material was edited in an incorrectly formatted sequence.

iDVD does not support anamorphic material, only true widescreen, like HD.

If you think a question’s been asked often you might try searching first.

The problem may be significant if the material was not captured correctly.

First, check the item properties for the clips. Are they set as anamorphic? If not they were captured incorrectly. You should read the manual about capturing, particularly about capturing anamorphic material to avoid this mistake in future.

If they are correctly set, then you need to make sure you are using the correct anamorphic preset in easy setup. Check easy setup and set it to the correct anamorphic format. Make a new sequence. Check its item properties to make sure it’s anamorphic.

Copy the contents of the incorrect sequence and paste them into the new correct sequence. The clips will look wrong. Select all the clips and use remove attributes to reset their distort and basic motion values. If you did any kind of motion work with the clips in FCP you will have to rebuild them. You may also have to rebuild the titles.

See the earlier message about issue with anamorphic material in iDVD.

I checked the settings and I did not set the capture settings to anamorphic…damn…so I guess that I’m stuck with what I have. Any other ideas..or would I basically have to recapture everthing again.

Would it work if I 1) export the entire movie…. 2) then bring that quicktime file into a new anamorphic sequence in FCP and 3)export that sequence into a new quicktime file….

Never mind that last suggestion wouldn’t work…because I’m not actually capturing the video….crap…
