    hey all,
i have green screened some footage in after effects, then used the auto-trace feature to make a mask of the keyed footage. now, i want to take those masks into illustrator to be able to edit each mask separately. Illustrator won’t let me copy a mask shape from AE, it just gives me a bunch of keyframe information.

My ultimate goal is to have created enough masks to bring into a 3D application and build a 3D model with the curves (or masks).

i know this is probably the worst, and cheapest, way to do a “3D scan”. But hey, you never know unless you try 🙂

    thanks everyone..

about the only way to get paths from ae to ai is to copy and paste. you will need to select each keyframe individually, hit copy, go to ai and paste. if you try to select the entire mask path property (or several keyframes) ai won’t know what to do with them…

the only thing i can think of that might make this better would be a script of some sort, but that is way beyond my programming skills… you could post in the ae expression forum here (they can help with some scripting too), or you could checkout a scripting site like aenhancers.com to see what they might have.

If your after effects comp is all vector files (or super high rez = 5000X5000) you can make the comp super big = 5000X5000 pixels. Then save file as a PSD = open it in Photoshop, make a selection (if two tone) then make paths from that selection. Copy and Paste into Illustrator. It should be very close to the 72 DPI AE comp. Hope that helps.
