  • export headache with FCP6 and Compressor 3

I’ve been working on a feature for a very long time – so long, in fact, that I’m still using FCP 6.0.6 with Compressor 3 on OS 10.6.8.

I have exported previous cuts in the past without issue. Now that I have a final cut, however, I’ve hit a snag.

When I try to export, whether through FCP or Compressor, the project gets hung up.

I suspect that this is due to the size of the project file, a ridiculously bloated 328mb.

The previous cuts I successfully exported were also way too big, around 250mb, but at some point this final – and shorter – version grew by a mysterious 100mb.

I’ve tried to slim the file but nothing works. I’ve purged it of everything but the sequence I’m exporting, I’ve deleted everything but the current project’s files in Render Manager and I’ve removed all markers. It’s still 328mb.

One clue: the opening FCP prompt declares 1200 render files missing – but the Reconnect screen shows no render files at all, and nothing to reconnect or dismiss.

Could my project be haunted by the ghosts of 1200 render files?

If so, how do I exorcize them?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Sounds like a corrupt render file is your issue… or a reference to such.

Try making a new project: called “exorcist” or something completely different from your other project.

Create a new timeline / sequence

Copy paste all content from old timeline to new timeline. (maybe you have to take section by section because of memory usage)

A few years since l did this, so I hope l remember the “steps”.

    Hope it helps!

    Good luck!

    Hi Gary

If deleting all preference files didn’t work I would export an xml of the final sequence and import it into a brand new project…

    good luck with it

Thanks Andreas, I’ll give it a try.

Thanks Steve, I’ll try that next. Will I need to delete all the render files and completely re-render the entire project?

Yes, with either solution it would be necessary to re render it all.

If you experience the same issue in compressor again I would take section by section through compressor and see where the buggy transition or file is.

Thanks Andreas, if slimming the project file doesn’t help I’m going to install Pro Maintenance Tools and use its corrupt file finder.

Update: I was able to both shed the phantom render files and shrink the project to a reasonable 57mb by combining both suggestions above. Thanks again for those.

But the project still won’t export. When exporting to Compressor, the project gets tantalizingly close to completion before crashing with a EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) error.

I’ve read this can be due to either bad RAM, or a bug in the software.

Unfortunately I can’t open the Apple Hardware Test to check my RAM (nothing happens when I press D on startup), but I did save the crash report, attached.

To anyone who can interpret it, who does it implicate in the crash – the RAM or a bug?
