  • Export HDV from FCP5 to AE7 (on Windows) doesn’t work…

    Hello,
I’m trying to export an HDV 1080i60 sequence from FCP 5 (on a Mac of course) to After Effects 7 (on a WinXP machine). AE doesn’t recognize it.

I export from FCP as a Quicktime with the “Current Settings” used for the export type. This effectively saves the file with the HDV 1080i60 codec.

I use a DVD to transfer the exported file from Mac to PC.

On the PC, I try to open the file in AE7 and get an all-white image. The codec shows up in AE as “Unknown”. When I try to open it with just Quicktime it says, “Quicktime requires addition software to play this file…” And when I look at the movie properties it says “HDV 1080i60”. Where can I get this codec for PC? It seems weird that it’s not built into Quicktime… is it only available on Quicktime for Macs?

HDV is a video format. There are different CODECs that suport this the HDV format. It’s evident that your PC doesn’t have the CODEC.

Your options are to look for a HDV version of the CODEC for the PC. OR transcode/export from FCP into another CODEC which the PC can read. Photo-JPEG at 96% should set you up pretty file interms of a manageable filsize and visual quality.

Additionally, you really do not want to work with HDV encoded files from within AE. It’s painfully slow.

    Cheers

Well, I already knew that my PC doesn’t have the right codec (HDV 1080i60). I’ve also searched for it but without success. But it seems weird that Apple would not provide this codec for PC users to manipulate FCP stuff in After Effects. Or is this something that Sony would provide?

Does anyone know if Apple’s Intermediate Codec would work on a PC?
