Export from FCP to FLV within FCP – Have Flash 8 – No option?

I just installed/upgraded to Flash 9 (CS3) and I still do not have that option in my Export to Quicktime Conversion.

SOLUTION:

After an aggravated attempt tonight to once again get this working because it is just such a pain to export a file and then reconvert in Flash. I finally figured it out.

I had Flash 8 installed previously but it did not work, I upgraded to Flash 9 (CS3) and still no go. Just minutes ago I found this at Adobe’s website and was excited to possibly have found the solution.

It says:

“Export to FLV” unavailable in QuickTime Pro or other video application on Intel-based Mac.

On Intel-based Macs the option to export to FLV will not be available in QuickTime Pro (or other applications that use QuickTime as their exporter, such as Final Cut Pro).

The Flash 8 QuickTime exporter plug-in (FLV.component) is not a Universal Binary. As a result QuickTime cannot ‘see’ it, and the export will not be available. This issue only effects Flash 8 and earlier. The Flash CS3 Professional exporter is a Universal Binary.

To resolve, set QuickTime Player to run in Rosetta mode:

1. Select QuickTime Player in the Applications folder.
2. Choose File> Get Info.
3. In the General section, choose “Open using Rosetta”.

Well, that was hopeful but it did not work for me. So, I checked the “date created” on the FLV.component in /library/quicktime folder and it said 2005. I renamed the flv.component to flv.component.bak and then figured out how to completely uninstall in OS X with an application called “AppCleaner” and decided to give it a go (there were quite a few competitive choices).I uninstalled Flash Media Encoder AND Flash 8 since the upgrade to Flash 9 did not do this during the upgrade.

Then I reinstalled “Flash Media Encoder” from my CS3 discs. I rechecked the folder and enabled the “version” column of my library/quicktime folder and I saw that a new flv.component file was created, the version was the same, “2,1,0,494” BUT the “date created” was “today” (odd). Then I noticed that the file size of the new file was 14 MB while the old file was 19.9 MB and was immediately hopeful once again! So I restarted OS X and WALLAH!

I now have a export > using Quicktime conversion > Flash Video (FLV) option and it works! It does not give the progress indicator like some said but the processor is chugging away.

So, the short simple steps to enable the FLV option in FCP are:

1. Rename /library/quicktime/flv.component to flv.component.bak
2. Uninstall Flash Media Encoder using AppCleaner
3. Reinstall “Flash Media Encoder” (CS3)
4. Restart OS X
5. Open up Final Cut Pro and save tons of time making FLV files!
6. Post back here to let me know it worked!

Hi Elijah,

I have the exact same problem as you. However your solution unfortunately did not work for me.

I am using FCP v5.x and QTPro v7.x and Flash Pro 8.0 (not CS3) which also comes bundled with Flash Video Encoder. No matter what I do I can’t get the encoder plugin to appear in any of the supported apps.

I have reinstalled the plugin twice now using your proposed solution without success. My FCP menus look identical to the screen shots you posted.

Any other ideas guys.

Hi Andrew,

Sorry this doesn’t work for you. I suspect it may be because I am using FCP 6 and you are using FCP 5. I am not sure if FCP 7 still has this issue or not so I can’t advise upgrading for your issue.

The only reason I even use Flash now is for the alpha channel. If you have video that does not use an alpha channel you may want to consider using H.264 instead as Flash 9+ supports that now and is a superior codec in my opinion. I wish H.264 specs included alpha, I would never even touch Flash codec then.

Hi,
I have now CS4 at work and i have fix that problem by reinstalling Flash Encoder CS3 on another Mac and Just for that time Quicktime 7 Pro…
Have copied in (Main) / Library / Quicktime /… the FLV.component
Uninstalled Flash and Quicktime…
and copy the plugin in the same place in the Main hard drive where CS4 is installed…

That works !
Just know that: as it’s really fast for keep or send a small size file of your project preview, CS4 arrived with a real Media Video Encoder which is better for all encoding.
