  • Export from AE to MP4 format?

Posted by Robert Hoisan on March 9, 2011 at 3:58 am

    Hi!

A need to send to a client a video. The video has to be MP4 and i get this suggestion for render within after effects. I understand that it refers to “export” rather than render? I tried to export with those settings, i even incresed the nr of kbs at 3000 but the video has poor quality. What setting i have to use to render out the material as mp4 in AE?

    Thanks!

Open the AE project in Adobe Media Encoder, select the comp you want to render and use the presets to export. AE is not really meant to compress files, it is best to render uncompressed from there and then use a compression software to encode for final delivery or use the method described above.

Like Tudor said, it’s best to use a dedicated compression application. Both MPEG-4 video compression and H.264 compression benefit from multipass encoding, giving you better visuals and smaller file sizes — but AE’s render queue is not built for multipass.

Has the client asked for any specifics for the MPEG-4 deliverable?

No, he just sent me those images i uploaded, no other specs. I think he want’s to put it on a web server, ready for streaming.

I’ve encode it with Adobe Media Encoder and uploaded the mp4 to them. Thank’s a lot for the advices, i had a feeling AE it’s not build to compress so good this type of files 🙂

If anything goes wrong, I’ll let you guys know.

    Cheers!

As of CC 2014 you can’t export MP4 video directly in After Effects, but you can use Media Encoder. This is mainly due to the fact that the old MP4 export system in After Effects had to be rewritten which was more trouble than what it was worth to the developers. Especially since all CC subscribers get Media Encoder anyways.

I made a video tutorial about this if you’re interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClGaK8fIJVk&lc=z12ru1x4vqmnejz0j232xzywfl2ggth5g04

You will need to use Adobe Media Encoder. You can set it manually but there are custom render presets for it. Here’s one for MP4 with H264 encoding:
