Export for colour grade
Posted by Etrev0911 on November 6, 2006 at 9:54 amHi all,
I have another question if you do not mind?
I have just completed a 23min documentary with sound.
I shot it on PAL DV.
I would like to deliver the sequence to a production house for a colour grade.
They would like it as a quick time and on tape.
When I export using “Quicktime movie” using the current settings the file is really small.(290.9MB). I do know that when I used the “using QT conversion” to burn a DVD the file was 1.03 GB.
What would be the best settings to export the video if it was shot on DV. How do we check it is set correctly?
what is the best way to deliver the sequence if it is to go to someone else for a color grade.
Thanks in Advance

Is the QT file just as a small reference file? OR are they going to want to
use the QT file to color correct? If it’s just as a reference file, then anything that would play on their computers would be good. Sorenson or MPEG-4 is usually a good choice. They make small files with good quality and they are very compatible.
IF they need to use the QT file, then at MINIMUM the file size should be 5.5gigs, and that’s just for a DV file size. You probably should try to keep it uncompressed or lossless which would make the file a lot bigger. Either way, you’ll need to give them a harddrive with the QT file on it. (unless you have a dual layer DVD burner)

November 6, 2006 at 8:36 pmSounds like a quicktime reference file – To get a DV file when you export, make sure it says “current settings” to match your editing environment and look for the “Make Movie Self-Contained” – if it is unticked, tick it.

November 7, 2006 at 8:54 amThanks Todd and Enzo,
Enzo- I ticked the “make movie selfcontained” and as Todd estimated it produced a file about 5.2 gigs. So I guess this is the right QT size to supply the grader. I may have to seperate the work into two DVD’s
Todd – I also will try your suggestion and created a UNCOMPRESSED 10 bit PAL 48kHz file. Is 10bit a better quality to supply that the 8 bit?

I think this is the absolute wrong workflow.
Here are my thoughts. Please find an FCP house that can take a media managed sequence and work on it on a “shot for shot basis”. If you want to provide a reference movie it is a good idea to nest a copy of your final sequence and apply the TC reader plugin before rendering out. Do this as a DV movie and it doubles as your sound reference file as well. SOund houses can deal with DV’s small file sizes and compatibility.
If you must go tape to tape then you should provided and edl to the DaVinci guy and that will at least let him “notch” the film. This will tell the Davinci where the edit points occur and then they can emulate a reasonably close to shot for shot correction.
Otherwise the tape to tape or flame or what ever box is being used to online will be adding the time of cutting up your quicktime file into events that can allow the colorist to correct ona shot for shot Basis.
Do not be fooled, FCP is a powerful and in many cases depending on how the room is set up, much higher picture quality online system than many Discreet or AVid Boxes (many older avids are still 8 bit for example the Adrenaline)
If you want to talk about this further, e-mail me off list and I can help guide you through to the best quality solution.
David

November 7, 2006 at 8:30 pmYou’re right, David. I never thought it the ideal workflow, but I am working under the assumption that trev knows what he is doing and has decided on this workflow for a reason.
Everything you say is spot on.
Come to think of it, if the grader had asked you for a qt file to actualy grade off, they are very likely not going to be very good, as they sound like they may not know what they are doing.
If you haven’t condsidered the options David has mentioned, then definitely take him up on his offer to help you work out a workflow if it’s not too late.
