  • Export FCP to DVDStudioPro – audio problems!

Posted by Stu Aull on September 21, 2005 at 3:27 am

Hi Folks – hope this is simple:
FCP 4.5, DVDStudioPro3 – Blackmagic SD Beta Sp:

1)Export FCP via Compressor to DVDPro: I can only get the DVD program to “recognize” 2 channels of audio (1 and 2), so if there are more channels (say, a 3rd FX audio channel, etc)on the FCP timeline, it is ignored on the burn. Tried using the “Mixdown” feature in the FCP mixer, but doesn’t help….
2)Stereo output of DVD: no matter how I pan the audio channels (left, right, all centered) in FCP, the stereo audio on the burned DVD is always Ch1 Voice, CH2 music/SFX (or whatever was on CH2 on the FCP timeline), meaning the stereo playback on a TV is split, not mixed – no prob in a small room, but a big room presentation means one side of the room hears the voice, the other, the music… I am assumimg the “fix” is in FCP, since there are no apparent controls for this in DVDStudio, but WHAT do I do to get a Mono-Mix on DVD(same sound out of both speakers)??
    Thanks!

First (to make sure) Trash the FCP preferences.

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

Then, make a COPY of your edited timeline.

On the copy, MAKE SURE that you Select (highlight) ALL of your audio tracks at once.

    Then choose:
Modify (menu) > Audio > Pan Center

This will, in fact, give you a full mono mix.

Try nesting your main edit sequence in a new sequence called output. then mixed down the the audio in both sequences. Export from the new output sequence. option apple R is the keystroke for mixing down audio. that way you are forcing FCP to mix however many channel to down to 2. That my work around for audio problems. Also don’t export your video this way, just audio. The video will be treated as one long clip and that will remove all the edit markers causing funky compression artifacts on transitions.

    Matte-
thanks for your reply!! I have The FCP rescue software – its great!
Appreciate your advice re: mono-mix in FCP via center panning BUT: even with that, the output-ed .aiff file via Compressor to DVD StudioPro3 STILL gives a stereo (Left= voice, Right = music) split!!
It ignores the Panned audio selections in FCP!! weirdness….

Trinty, will try your nesting idea and post results here-
    anyone else??
this has GOT to be a common problem?! Is it just my system doing this??
    regards

There may be another setting in FCP that could be causing problems.
If your audio “output” is set incorrectly, it MIGHT cause the audio to “split” instead of “mix”.

    Open FCP.
Click once anywhere on the Timeline Window.

    Hit “Apple-0 (zero)”
    Sequence Settings Window will open.

Audio Outputs (tab) > Load Audio Output Preset… > Default Stereo Preset
