  • Export EDL with key code

Posted by Agustin Goya on June 24, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Hi, I’ve recieved an edited film project and a cimema tools database. I need to export an EDL for scanning and don’t know how to do it. I have all the metadata needed in cinematools but I cannot see it in FC.
Is there any way to export an EDL referenced to keycode?
If that’s not possible, What should I export for the scan lab?
    Thanks in advance.
Any help will be verry appreciated.

[Agustin Goya] “Hi, I’ve recieved an edited film project and a cimema tools database.”
first question is the Dbase from the flex file or has it been updated based on the FCP edits?

“I need to export an EDL for scanning and don’t know how to do it.”

When we are talking about a true film out, errors on this part can cost the production HUGE amounts of money, errors in your process could feasibly add a zero or even 2 to the cost of the scanning and prints.

Stop where you are at an talk to the Post house you are working with, release prints are very expensive and if you are not sure what they need or how to achieve it- it is best to go to whom ever you are working with and talk first.

Hy Gary, I know what you mean, the thing is that all the actors involved in the chain are firs timers, post house also (worst of scenarios) This is not a project edited by me I’m just lending a hand to help solve the enormous amount of errors they’ve made (Director/Editor, production, etc). I’m an avid editor so I’m not used to the FCP workflow.
I can output an XML but how do I translate it to something readable by the scanner?
If I could only export at least an ALE for scan, that would be helpful.
Thanks for your help, I really understand what you say, and believe me this ain’t going to be painless.

select the sequence (for simplicity only open one Seq at a time)

the go to File > Export > EDL should work for you. Most use the CMX settings

you also have the abilty to export your your edit into the CT database here as just audio, film list, or changes to get it to match the CT database.

if all you need is an EDL, (and that’s becoming more and more common) then a simple EDL export will probably do.

if you need the Keycode, then you need to export a Cinema Tools Film List.
been a while since i did it,
but you do that in FCP,
then point it to the master cinematools database,
    and take it from there.

read up on it in hte CT manual.

to avid any errors, you would always send a reference copy of the film with burnt in timecode to the people doing the work.
either on tape, or these days file.

as Garry says, talk to them.

    cheers,
    nick

An EDL exported from FCP as CMX 3600 will do just fine on any of these systems. Northlight, Imagica, Spirit4k scanners. Lustre, Nucoda, Resolve, Baselight, iQ grading/conform systems.

I’ve used it for over 30 films

One thing you may encounter is that the FCP EDL will refer to the tape and not labroll as the scanner/conform system expects.

Unless there’s an automatic way of achieving this I don’t know about, you’ll have to change the sources in your FCP project to refer to lab roll name/mumbers.
