Explosion in very shocking footage
Hello guys,
I’m working on a project for school right now, and I’m making a short action movie. Of course there are some explosions in them, but now I’ve got a problem. I’ve got some very shocking footage and I need to place and explosion in it. I’ve already tried using motion tracking in After Effects, but that doesn’t work. Any Id’s?

Did you try applying the tracking data to a null? If you do that, then you can parent your explosion layer to the null, and it will follow the motion of the camera.

Well, I sure would try it, but the motion is so fast that is isn’t able to track any points at the time of the explosion.

Oh my apologies. When I read that you tried motion tracking, I assumed you tracked and applied the points to the footage layer itself.
I believe Andrew Kramer is coming out with a new tutorial soon regarding this matter. Until then, I know he mentions a couple of things in his blog on videocopilot.net to try under his stabilizing footage entry.
I know you aren’t going to be stabilizing the footage, but you might be able to reverse motion track it. If you can stabilize it, then he has a technique in his Demon Face Warp tutorial that you can refer to.

Thank you very much, I’ve solved the problem right now. I found 1 point with a bit higher contrast in the video. So i was being able to track the motion by hand as well (because of motion blur). The results will be posted on youtube if you are being interested, search for ahottens.
