experience with shared storage from GB Labs Space?
Posted by Micha Blazer on February 11, 2012 at 7:15 pmI am about to buy a shared storage system from GB Labs. Does anyone has experience with this system? I have 4 edit suites whit FCP 7.0.3. I am also curious if anybody is using this with FCP X?

February 11, 2012 at 8:49 pmGot a link for it? If it is a NAS, it won’t work. Not up to the demands of video shared storage. NAS is for sharing files. Not video files.

February 13, 2012 at 3:31 pmI’ve seen some buzz about Space so I spent some time trying to figure them out. From the 3 screen shots that seem to exist in the world, they don’t support AFP (so no netatalk). That means no “ignore permissions” capability which is a headache. NFS and FCP don’t play well, so you’re restricted to Samba.
Perhaps they’ve added AFP since that screen shot or would be willing to post their manual somewhere. As far as I can tell, they don’t post it.

February 14, 2012 at 1:07 amFor the record, we have hundreds of direct customers editing video over NAS and thousands more doing it with our network cards. You can certainly edit video over a NAS. It just requires an understanding of how networking and IO work together.

I’m curious – What did you end up going with and are you editing 4K?

January 13, 2015 at 9:19 amHi Joe,
I’ve ended up buying the Space. It is 32T and I have been using it with great saticfaction for the last three years. I have never used it for 4K. The Space is connected to 4 edit suites. And it is capable of 4 x ProRes HD streams on all sets together on the same time.
