Expand and contract grayed out
Using PSE4. I open a tif file, press ctrl-A to select all, then select:
SELECT > MODIFY
The only option available is BORDER. SMOOTH, EXPAND and CONTRACT are grayed out. So I duplicate the background, highlight the new layer and do the same thing on the layer but they are still grayed out.
I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Why are they grayed out?

Try expanding the Canvas size and see if that helps.

Just tried it. The smooth, expand and contract options are still grayed out.

Don’t do a SELECT ALL. The modify command doesn’t work if you go up the edges of the image. Expand the canvas size then marquee select the original area that you wanted to select.
You need pixels in the image that can be expanded into for those commands to work.

Thanks for your insight. The reason I want to do a contract is that when I scan multiple photos and have PSE4 auto-straighten and crop, often times there is a little white showing on of the edges of photos. Realizing that the size of the photos vary, my goal is to crop about 5 – 10 pixels off the borders of photos. (Actual number of pixels to crop off will vary depending on size of photo and resolution scanned at).
Anyone with an easy way to do this?
