I did a search for this error and can’t seem to find a fix:

Exception: The sequence or one of its source elements is too long to be played.

Such an odd one and I am running 2018.10.x on a Mac Pro High Sierra.

I’ve had that error and I think it was when I made group clips with shots that had timecode going over from one day to the next, past midnight. The clip would not load and got that error. I looked at the duration and it was something like 14 hours long! It couldn’t make the group clip correctly because of the timecode.

So check the durations of whatever you are getting that error on, particularly if it’s a group clip.

[Nina Lucia] ” I looked at the duration and it was something like 14 hours “

    Thanks Nina.
Man, that would be tough to find in this feature-length sequence.
However, I don’t see any group clips at all and not sure if that was ever used.
Pat Horridge posted this on the Avid site and I will be testing it asap:

My normal troubleshooting steps would be:
    Re boot computer
    New user setting
New project (and then copy that bin in)
Mark an In and out at each end of sequence and copy that to a new sequence
Try turning off (or deleting in a copy sequence) tracks one at a time to isolate the track
Divide the sequence up to locate the problematic clip or section.

    Hope it works.

Can you try the Play Length Toggle option ?

[Ben McCarthy] “Can you try the Play Length Toggle option ?

I had to step away from this.
I will get back on it later this afternoon.
The steps from Pat didn’t work for me at all.
Not sure why this is persistent and not with the older sequences.
I have the project and media files used for the re-edit and will give that a try later as well.

    Thanks, Ben that one works.
To be honest, I just took the project/files from post house and left that on a small drive.
I just needed it to be able to preview and cut another 8 min from a feature.

Stupid Broadcasters and their length rules…how dare they 😉

What bugs me is that scouring the Avid forum is futile for this one.
Not one search came up with your tip.

This error is still persistent but does go away.
Wish I knew what brings it back since its a time waster when editing with clients 😛
