Excellent Explosion Tutorial

July 20, 2007 at 1:40 pmWhat I like about that tutorial (the one jonl521 pointed out) is that he’s using footage from a real explosion (At least I think it’s real) with particles. Definitely makes things look more real.
In general, using a mix of real and fake for organic effects that we see regularly (water, fire…etc.) can be very helpful in the process of creating believable effects. The fake ones can be used to help customize it to the environment – like having the sparks hit the floor.
Also would like to point out that you should use the force motion blur effect with shatter to simulate motion blur – otherwise it looks quite fake.
