EX3 to FCP7 to Vimeo
Hello,
I have done a 4 minute movie, shot on an EX3 using format 1080/50i, but some of it is also shot in 720/25p.
Having done an edit in FCP7, I am now trying to export and compress the movie for use on Vimeo.
I have saved the sequence settings to Pro Res 422, then exporting out of FCP using Quicktime movie. Then I am putting that file back through the compressor and have tried all sorts of data rate restrictions and frame rates.When I then upload the video to Vimeo it seems to work fine on my Macbook pro but when anyone else tries it who may not have as good internet speed as me, it is very slow loading or the video seems to stop and start constantly.
I desperately need to get the movie playing smoothly on Vimeo straight away when loaded without sacrificing really good HD quality.
I have tried the following settings-
frame rate 25 fps
key frames every 25
data res 5000 kb/sAudio rate 44.1 AAC
Frame controls ON
output field- progressive
deinterlace- betterFrame size 1280×720.
These settings seem to provide a great quality video, but it’s not playing when I upload to vimeo and try it on some of my friends’ machines.
Could this be because I am using progressive and interlaced footage in the sequence?
CAn you only get HD results on Vimeo by keeping the data rate above 5000 kb/s?
Is it just a question of tweaking the frame rate, key frames and data rate?
I have been trying different combinations for days and am worried I am doing something fundamentally wrong with the settings.I really need some help with these setting please please!!

Once it’s on Vimeo it’s their encode.
Depending on why the viewers are having problems they can turn off HD if it’s data rate or switch to HTML5 if it’s a Flash issue and they have HTML5 H.264 compatible browser.You could post a link if you want us to have a look but any playback issue is likely not related to your encode/upload from what it sounds like.

Ref Frames 4This is their encode of your source file. It played smoothly for me but I have 30,000Kbps down.
Their average is OK but I can imagine a peak of nearly 7000Kbps could cause issues at those points.
Again nothing you can do about it as it’s their encode but that could be the trouble points. -
Confirming Vimeo is consistent. I checked your other upload the the data rates are almost exactly the same.

Peak 6697Someone with less than 10,000kbps download would be cutting it close for smooth playback given the variable nature of some broadband connections.

Nothing you can do on the encoding side. Viewer would have to turn off their HD button which would give them a lower data rate.
