  • EX3 codec for FCP 6.1

    Posted by Danielle Wang on September 24, 2008 at 7:33 am

    Hi,
    I’m trying to import some QTs shot with an EX3 into FCP. I’m using 6.1 but the QTs will not play picture, saying I am missing a codec. I tried it on my office computer, which has the codec listed in application support, but it still did not display picture. Does anyone know where I can download the actual codec? It seems like the only thing I can find is the transfer program from sony, which doesn’t allow me to play the video, I have already tried it. I don’t have the camera, I just have the QTs the DP gave me on a drive. Thanks for any help!

    You can get it when installing the XDCAM Transfer Software.
    Make a Google search or ask in the SONY CineAlta Forum.

    No true Rafael, the codec for the EX series is part of the FCP 6.0.2 update, specifically it is the AppleHDVCodec.component Version: 1.4 (v218).

    Danielle, FCP 6.1 isn’t released, I’m guessing you mean you have FCP 6.0.1 … if you don’t have FCP 6.03 or above installed then you won’t have the codec. You need to run Software Update.

    FCP 6.0.2 and beyond work with the Sony XDCAM software which you need to install.

    https://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/Final_Cut_Pro_6.0_rn/
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 includes support for the Sony XDCAM EX format, but it requires the installation of the Sony XDCAM Transfer software and an XDCAM EX plug-in. For more information about this software, go to the Sony website at https://www.sony.com/xdcam.

    Final Cut Pro includes the following 1080-line XDCAM EX Easy Setups:

    * XDCAM EX 1080p24 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 1080p25 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 1080p30 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 1080i50 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 1080i60 VBR

    Final Cut Pro also includes the following 720-line XDCAM EX Easy Setups:

    * XDCAM EX 720p24 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 720p25 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 720p30 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 720p50 VBR
    * XDCAM EX 720p60 VBR

    Important: A separate plug-in from Sony is required to enable these features.

    Connecting an XDCAM EX Camcorder or SxS Card to Your Computer

    You can mount XDCAM EX media on your computer desktop by doing one of the following:

    * Connect the camcorder to your computer with a USB cable.
    * Insert an SxS card directly into the ExpressCard/34 PCMCIA slot in a MacBook Pro computer.

    When connecting an XDCAM EX camcorder to your computer, you must set the camcorder to target device mode. See the manual that came with your camcorder for instructions.
    Working with XDCAM EX Footage

    Once you ingest your XDCAM EX footage to QuickTime media files on your scratch disk, you can simply choose the XDCAM EX Easy Setup that corresponds to your footage and edit as you would with any other native format in Final Cut Pro.

    Rendering and conforming XDCAM EX media works in the same way as HDV and XDCAM HD rendering and conforming.

    Cheers,
    Ernesto

    Yeah, sorry, I meant 6.01. So I am getting this right. There isn’t a separate codec I can download onto my 6.01? I have to upgrade to a newer version to see the QTs?

    Hi Andy,
    How are you doing?
    You are right Andy XDCAM is supported since FC6.0.2 but as XDCAM HD. I think that if you don’t get the SONY Transfer Software it doesn’t shows up as XDCAM EX. I guess that they only changed the name and added the Sequence Presets.
    Anyway you’ve been working long time with the format and you know it quite well. I’ve really started to pay attention when I bough the camera and I was already with FC6.0.4 so no much idea how was with previous FC versions.

    I just solved this problem, I find the reason why quicktime can’t see the footage from EX3, you must download a firmware update,

    ProAppsUpdate2007-02.

    That’s ok. now i can see my footage.haha.
