EX1r LCD went dim
I have a new sony EX1r and just turned it on and the LCD display is very faint/dim. What is bizarre is I have another (1 year old) EX1 too (as apposed to my new EX1r) I just sent it in to Sony because the LCD went dim, (and I had another unrelated issue with it for Sony to fix.) I’d say the LCD is about 4% of normal brightness. If I close the LCD screen the eyepeice/viewfinder looks perfect. Has anyone else heard of this? Could it be a setting? (which I don’t think it’s a setting, but just because I’ve managed to do it twice I’m considering the possibility.) I will send it back to Sony, but don’t have the down time, especially until my other EX1 gets back to me. Thought? Ideas? Thanks – Kel

Now don’t beat up on me because I’m just trying to help and this first question is sort of a no brainer:
- Did you play with the “LCD Bright” settings below the top handle on the EX1R?
- Try the “Reset All” in the main menu.
- Try pulling the main battery and the memory battery and let the camera “rest” for a few min.

LCD settings in menu – I did play with… nothing.
All reset I did… nothing.
Main battery – I did pull… nothing.
I have not yet tried pulling the backup battery… but will shortly.

No, not the LCD settings in the menu (is there a setting?) but the physical push switches underneath the top handle on the camera body. There are 2 switches for the LCD brightness – plus and minus.
Other than pulling the memory battery if it’s still not getting brighter then send the camera in for warranty. You’re right, though. Having two cameras under repair for the same thing is quite the coincidence.

Just out of curiosity… what would one want to dim it like that for…

(Glad that wasn’t the only reason I sent my other camera back to Sony… it had a nasty spill and needed a new plate to attach to the tripod.)

Not sure but perhaps to save battery power with a dimmer display in darker shooting situations. I know that most users like to have the LCD as bright as the resulting footage will be so they can more accurately judge brightness levels.

Hi Kel,
It happened to me twice and both time I thought the LCD was broken (you can still see the picture but barely blacked out, right?).
In my case, it fixed both time by pushing “LCD B. Light” button to ON (I don’t know how it switched to OFF).Good if it was that for you as well (better that than sending back to Sony or resetting all settings!).
