Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Ex1 multicam?

    Hi All,

I’m a longtime Avid user looking for the best solution to edit a multicam location shoot which is slated to be shot on 3x Sony XDcam EX 1.

Given that Avid seems to be lagging behind with ex1 support, I’m looking at alternatives for this project. What I need to know is:

1, will FCP be able to handle mutiple streams of ex1 material in 35mbs HQ mode (we’re looking at 3 cameras, but some of it will be multipass music with 3x 3 camera passes)

    2. If the smoothness of the opperation will depend on hardware, what kind of hardware am I going to need? I had hoped to do it on a laptop with raid 5 attached storage.

    3. On-line is going to be on Smoke – which can import XML with embedded BMD uncompressed QT. Would I be able to export such a file without rendering it in FCP beforehand? (the edit will be cuts only)

    many thanks people

Sure. Just make sure you have fast enough drives. Firewire 800 might be able to do a couple streams, but an eSATA drive or external, or even internal drive RAID array will get you more streams of video. And also make sure that you have at least 4GB of RAM. And the proper computer. Don’t try this with an iMac, get a tower or MacBook Pro.

If you want a laptop, then a MacBook Pro is what you need. Raid 5 storage for that? Your options are limited. I know that the CalDigit HDPro and HDOne will work, as CalDigit also makes an Express34 adapter for them. So that might be your ticket.

Got me here. When you import the footage into FCP, you are copying the XDCAM format into a quicktime format. Not sure that that format is something that the Smoke will read. You might have to convert to something that the Smoke can use. BMD…black magic design?

    Hi Shane

Thanks for the post. Yeah, BMD = Black Magic Design. Smoke can import XML files with various forms of uncompressed media. It cuts out a re-conform, which HAS to be a good thing.

many thanks for the quality advice
