    Hi all

we’re about to embark on a multicam shoot using 3 ex1’s. Although I’ve used it very little thus far, Vegas looks to be favourite to edit the project becuase of its native ex support. I’ve got a couple of questions about workflow:

    1. We’re purchasing a raid 5 solution to store the media – of which there will be a lot – so, how much room (per hour) does ex material require (in HQ mode) to store?

    2. Will it simply be a matter of draging and dropping the original files of the cards and onto the raid? Can we simply create a directory for each camera and each day and drop the files in there? Is it desireable, or even advicable, to re-name the clips at that point for organisation purposes?

    2. We had intended to use a pro-tools equiped studio to do our audio post work. Do you have any idea if the sound timeline can be moved elegantly from Vegas to pro-tools?

3 The edit will be cuts-only, and the intention is to do the final grade and on-line in Autodesk Smoke. What do you suggest as the best route to get the cut sequence from Vegas to Smoke? I had thought of recording it on to the new PMW-EX30 deck, and playing it HDSDI of there into the Smoke, but I understand it may be possible to export a Targa sequence directly from Vegas using scripting? how difficult is this?

I’m sorry to ask SO many questions, but this is real virgin territory for us, our first major tapeless project.

    Many thanks for your time

    Angus

    1. Off the top of my head I want to say each hour of HQ setting footage will take 15-16gb.

    2. Vegas supports the MXF files that Sony’s Clipbrowser software exports. The EX1 actually makes a folder on the card for every single clip with several files in each folder. Once it’s connected to the pc (make sure you have the latest Clipbrowser software, because the version that comes on the cd with the camera can’t even export the EX1 files to mxf!) you just select all the clips and say export to mxf and pick a directory. You’ll probably want to rename the files in a multicam shoot just so there’s no confusion. I use a great little shell extension for windows called Multiren which you can google for.

Sorry but I don’t have any experience with Smoke so I can’t help you on #3.

re your audio: any partic reason you need to use protools? Vegas is able to handle pretty much most of anything protools can do, and do it more easily to boot.

have a dig into that subject – you might save yourself some $$$, seeing as already intending to use vegas for part of your project

Targa: yes, could (eg) use quicktime export as TGA sequence, or PNG etc. All the usual quicktime codecs. Or as uncompressed AVI etc

    Gents,

Thanks for the input. The reason that we plan to use pro-tools is simply that

A.it’s what the audio post house has.

    B. I’m hopeless at sound 🙂

We may retink our strategy though.

    Thanks again

    Angus
