I’m thinking about buying a MacBook Pro 13″ for capturing EX1 footage using FCP on location. Will this work or do I need to get a 15″? Not really interested in the 17″, too cumbersome when travelling.
Re. the 15″, is it recommendable to include the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT 512MB? I assume 4Gb memory should be enough.
    thx in advance

[Michiel van der Zeeuw] “I’m thinking about buying a MacBook Pro 13″ for capturing EX1 footage using FCP on location. Will this work”

No. It lacks the required Express34 slot that the SxS cards fit into.

[Michiel van der Zeeuw] “or do I need to get a 15”? “

Sorry…won’t work either. Apple recently replaced the Express34 slot on these models with an SD card slot.

[Michiel van der Zeeuw] “ot really interested in the 17”, too cumbersome when travelling. “

Sorry…That is the only model that still has the built in SxS Express34 slot that you can slide the card directly into. So if you insist on the 13″ or 15″, you’ll need to buy some sort of adapter.

[Michiel van der Zeeuw] “is it recommendable to include the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT 512MB?”

    Yes.

[Michiel van der Zeeuw] ” I assume 4Gb memory should be enough. “

Ample. I get by with 2GB.

Its really not cumbersome, in fact its vary nice having a computer that with that much screen that is still vary portable.

And like Shane says its the only one with the express slot.

IMO If you travel a lot the 15″ is the way to go. The 15″ with a 23″+ on the desk to plug into. That way you have a great big screen to work off when at home-base, and a more portable workhorse when out on the road/ on location.

I had a 17″ and loved it…. until the novelty of the beast wore off. At the time I was doing a bunch of road travel and hotel room editing. It may seem like only a few inches here and a few ounces there more than a 15″ but it really does take its toll in the laptop bag. Add an external or two and adaptors and headphones, perhaps a deck, IOHD, whatever the case …… every inch and every ounce counts.

The 17″ was unfortunately stolen and I replaced it with a 15″.

What a difference in portability. In my case I’d never go back to the 17″.

Oh, and yes it does suck that Apple took out the express slot on the 15, but the camera or card reader will still plug in via FW.

Another thought is that many people are using the SD Card adapted SxS’s in the EX1/3’s. If this is the case then no worries with the SD slot on the 15″

If you want to do anything more than just log and xfer I’d stay clear of the 13″. Go for the 15″ with the dedicated gfx card.

I use Mac for everything, but I gonna buy an small PC for downloading on the field.
For some 500$$ don’t need to carry and make suffer my MBP 17.
And the PC boys are releasing USB-3 that can be great for downloading fast.

you can use XD transfer so you don’t need the slot for the card.. it’s a USB so it is not as fast as FW but I am doing it fine on the 13″MBP.
my MBP w/4G ram does everything fine including some intense editing of HD content. w/a small ext drive I do a lot of remote work, in my car, a coffee shop or anywhere.
