EX1-DVD: know the tech, FCP keeps crashing
The instructions I’m working with are from here: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/ex1_sd_output_young.html
My sequence settings, adapted from his PAL/25fps instructions:
720×480 CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27)
Pix Aspect Ratio: NTSC-CCIR 601/DV(720×480)
Anamorphic box checked
Field Dominance: none
QT Settings
Compressor: Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2
Quality 100%Audio
48kHz
16-bit
Channel GroupedThe original footage/timeline I edited in is XDCAM EX 1080i60
It gets maybe 50% of the way through rendering or exporting a FQ self-contained QT movie before Final Cut (6.0.4) crashes. I just exported a QT movie directly from a XDCAM EX timeline without problem, which makes me think one of my sequence settings in the downconverted timeline is making the export impossible.
Any advice?

Hi Andrew,
Just forget about that tutorial.
You have your EX-1 sequence ready, isn’t it?
You have as well an NTSC sequence ready (your specs are OK).
First question: You have shoot in 1080i (Interlaced). Do you want your DVD to be Progressive?
If you want it Progressive, set field order NONE. If you want it interlaced set it Upper first.
– Drop your EX-1 sequence in the NTSC sequence.
– If you have choose Progressive, you need apply a De-interlacing filter (Nattress is OK, will work in 10b).
– In Sequence setting (you set 10b Unc, you can use ProRes as well), check “Render all YUV material in High Precisson”.
– Set “Render Motion Effects: BEST”.
Export.
You will get an NTSC Anamorphic, Upper First.There are people that think that all the NTSC stuff must be Lower First and you can only make NTSC MPG-2 Lower first. Wrong. I’m right now working with footage coming from NTSC MPG-2 Upper First.
You will make a MPG-2 Upper first that will play great.In Compressor choose the preset that suits you and duplicate it.
In the Inspector set Stream Usage: SD DVD.
In Video Format set:
– Video Format: NTSC
– Aspect Ratio: 16 x 9.
– Field Dominance: Top First.Set Frame Control ON.
Set Field Order: Same as source.
Export.
