    Hi,

I am currently considering the Ex1, however i’ve a few concerns:

I currently own a Powerbook G4 17″ 1.5gb ram, FCP 5, which i understand just wont cut it with the EX1 footage, or at least provide a nightmare in the edit.

But I also have unlimited aceess to girlfriend’s Imac intel duo core, 2GHz, 1gb Ram, until i purchase a Macbook Pro (waiting for some serious updates).

Will this machine be up to it? I could always upgrade the RAM..

I will be using this set up for Promos/showreeels/film and docu work. I am also limited financially. Say to a budget of £5K Ex-Vat, but that needs to also cover a Tripod and FC studio. A new laptop would destoy my budget at this moment, or would force me to buy the XHa1, which i appreciate is also a great camera in its own right.

Any reccomendations on a reasonably priced tripod?

How might the Matthews MN25 tripod stand up with the EX1?

    Thanks,

    Harjinder

You will need an Intel Mac to use the XD Cam Transfer software with files from the EX1.
Once you transfer to .mov with the XD Cam Transfer software I believe any Mac running FC 6.0.2 should work for editing.

    Good Luck

    Hi Michael,

Do you know if the Intel Imac will be strong enough to edit HD,or will it struggle?

I imagine upgrading the ram from 1GB to 3GB should make things better.

Anyone have experience with this set up?

    Best,

    Harjinder

You do NOT need an Intel Mac to use the Sony Transfer Tool.
You WILL need SxS driver which works on both Intel and G5.

Sony Clip Browser is Intel ONLY.
On Mac, Clip Browser is only for viewing and copying files from card.
It does not require FCP 6.0.2

Sony Transfer Tool runs on my G5 just fine.
Sony Transfer Tool allows one to view files (with codec installed if you have 6.0.2) and rewraps the .mp4 to .mov (for use in FCP 6.0.2 or viewing in QuickTime).
Sony Transfer Tool can be used as a Stand Alone App or as plugin in FCP 6.0.2.
I suspect Sony Transfer Tool will work without FCP 6.0.2 (XDCAM EX codec) installed but that might limit you to rewrapping without clip viewing.

XDCAM codec at 35mbps VBR is a bit more demanding than HDV 25mbps CBR but any computer that can handle HDV can probably handle XDCAM. My aging Dual 2.3GHz G5 can edit XDCAM without issue (cuts and dissolves) so your iMac should certainly handle it.

My MBP 2.4 duo edits XDcamHD(35mbs) from my 350 perfectly.
