I saw a recent posting on here implying that you could get SD-SDI out of the EX1. Is that true? I always understood the EX1 was HD only and that SD only came with the EX3.

Can someone clarify this for me please?

    Hi Alan,

You can’t do native SD recording to SxS on the EX1 but you can down convert during HD playback or E-E mode. Menu–>Video Set–>Y PB PR / SDI OUT = SD.

    Best,

Thanks for this Ian. You don’t happen to know what the E-E quality is like do you? Good enough for decent chromakey?

If you’re taking the live output from the camera head it’s actually at higher quality than during playback as you are getting an uncompressed 4:2:2 stream. If you’re playing out from a card the quality is not reduced but obviously you’re hitting the 35 MB codec first and coming out 4:2:0.

Having just lost a old but trusted broadcast SD camera that I used for studio greenscreen this is great news.

    Thanks Alan

    Alan,
But you would get a better CK from an HD source than from an SD one.
In fact plain EX-1 footage has (more or less) the same number than Chroma samples than SD/10b Unc.

[Alan Lacey] “Thanks for this Rafa. That’s interesting info.”
And I forgot to add Alan, EX-1 has 4 times more Luma samples than any SD format.
To make a “White-screen” (I’ve never tried) should be rocking good.
    Cheers,
    Rafa
