So maybe I’m going crazy. Maybe I didn’t see what I thought I saw.

A few weeks ago, I received footage from what I’m assuming was an XDCAM. It was packaged in MXF format. I was thinking that I was going to need to use a converting tool that was used about 6 months ago to convert EVS files to QT (or DV in that case). I found out that we had special permission to use a trial version of the software since it wasn’t an everyday event that we needed the converter for.

So I started researching how I could possibly convert it. I went through as many forums here as I could. And a number of other boards in lots of other places. I didn’t find any information that would lead me to a quick fix. So I put it aside for a little while.

Later that same day I was asked by my boss to come up with a wish list of budget requests. The first one on my list was an upgrade to CS5. I wasn’t sure which edition we had so I started searching my applications folder. Since we primarily use FCP, I didn’t know that I had Premiere Pro. So I had an epistle or episiotomy. I decided to import my footage through Premiere and see if I could export it into something I could use. (In hindsight I might have been able to import them somehow easier, but since we didn’t have the converting tool anymore, I was desperate to try anything.)

Lo and behold, it worked for the “XDCAM” footage. I also went back to EVS footage to see if that would work too. Now here’s where things might not be how I think I remember things. I tried one file and it converted it into a nice MOV.

So I was overjoyed that we wouldn’t need a special tool to convert future EVS footage. (We do high school championships at Thanksgiving time and from the end of February through March. The melt reels are offloaded to a hard drive so they can use them next year on the same machine in the same truck.)

Fast forward to 2 months later. And I get the hard drive from this past weekend. And can you guess what happened? I can’t convert the EVS MXF files.

The only thing that I can think that “may” have caused the change was a change in “Flip4Mac”. We had some issues that caused an incomplete upgrade of Flip4Mac. It caused FCP to not export sequences properly into WMV format. IT came and fixed it by removing the upgrade and returned it to our original version. That is the only thing I can think of that changed.

Or have I just entered that zone where after hours in my edit cave I was hallucinating and was blinded by wishful thinking and I never actually converted the EVS footage?

    Sincerely,

One haggard promotions preditor in the Twin Cities
