    Hi,

I’m trying to do a sports highlight video where I freeze the action and then add a spotshadow via Sony Cookie Cutter in Event FX. I need to know what I am doing wrong:

    1. I paused my video where I wanted to freeze the action. I then hit “S” to cut the video apart.

    2. I then hit Save Snapshot to File, place the .PNG file on my track, and then elongate the .PNG file to a couple of seconds.

    3. I then copy the .PNG file to a track above and resize it to match the original.

    4. Then I click on “Effect FX” and choose “Sony Cookie Cutter”. I use the “Yellow Glowing Portrait” present and I move it around and resize it to match the person I want to highlight.

    5. I then connect the rest of the video to resume action.

Not sure if this is the best method. If not, please tell me if there’s a better/faster way to do this.

Here is my problem: after I make the Cookie Cutter, it often gets cut off on my preview screen. If I drag it too much to the left or right, it disappears. There is an invisible circle centered in the middle so that it creates a semicircle boundary on both sides. If I surpass it with my circle, it gets cut off. I assume it is related to “Split Screen View”. I have tried toggling it off and on, or choosing FX Bypassed, Clipboard, View all, etc. Nothing works. The invisible circle boundary disappears if I select View All, but then I can’t see my Cookie Cutter circle (although it is there where I left it if I view either side of the screen.

What am I doing wrong? I assume this is a simple fix, but I am stumped.

Thanks for any help out there.

Ok, I realize now why it was getting cutoff with a circle – I had hit Event FX for the entire track itself.

Now that that is answered, is this the best/fastest method to make a spotshadow for sports highlights? I would rather have a cooler looking shadow, but all the choices from Vegas are pretty vanilla. Is it possible to make the circle, for example, actively glowing, or a rotating, etc?

I answered this on the Basics forum where you also posted the same question.

Sorry. I posted there when my original question didn’t show up here. Thanks.

As to the “method” I’m using to make the spotshadow, is there a better/faster method?

[John Lee] “As to the “method” I’m using to make the spotshadow, is there a better/faster method?”

I answered that too. I like to use a Generated Media Color Gradient event on the track above with the Elliptical Ring preset. Then adjust the ring to circle your subject. This way you don’t have to duplicate your video.
