evenly spaced type per character
Posted by Tom Ma on May 24, 2012 at 6:55 pmIs there a way to format type in AE (CS5) so that each character is evenly spaced?
by that I mean, each character occupies the same amount of pixels in width. So that, no matter what the source type is, each character falls in the same spaces.
I am using Akzidenz Grotesk currently.Joseph W. bourke replied 13 years, 11 months ago 2 Members · 4 Replies -

May 24, 2012 at 8:28 pmAs far as I know, the only way to accomplish that is to use a Monospaced font, specifically designed for that purpose. Here’s a listing of some of the more common ones:

Here are a few more:

The other types of fonts are designed with sets of kerning pairs, in which they are designed to look good on the page, not to have the same spacing between each letter. The monospaced fonts are often called Programmers Fonts, because they’re easy to comprehend in large blocks of code.

May 24, 2012 at 8:39 pmThere is no monospaced version of Akzidenz Grotesk from what I can see – even the complete $750 font family from Linotype shows no such version. I hope you haven’t gotten too far in your type design.

May 24, 2012 at 10:31 pmGood memory, Dave, but the switch to turn off Proportional Spacing is in the Numbers Effect, not in the Character or Paragraph panels. I think the only way to utilize it is to make number animations monospace so that they don’t jump around when they’re counting up or down.
